              <text>In Morrison’s hands, the "automatic" drawing of the Surrealists developed into the freely improvised gestures of "action painting." The technique of spontaneously dripping, splashing or smearing paint onto a canvas that was championed by abstract expressionists. Even modestly scaled drawings like this one could embody the exuberance, openness, and exhilaration of this method of working. Lyrical and subjective, this tempera balances quasi-structural “blocks” of black and cobalt blue with thinner, creamier passages of pink, strawberry, and pale rose to create an image that seems both dreamy and erotic at the same time.</text>
