Description
describe the object
In this painted landscape, George Morrison used layered brushstrokes, subdued colors, and textures to depict the shores of Lake Superior during the autumn season. The top third of the work is painted with gray and light blue pigment while the lower portion is covered with overlapping strokes of green, orange, purple, and blue. The painting is divided by a horizon line a third from the top.

Using layers of broken brushstrokes and subdued colors, Morrison captured the somber qualities of autumn in this small acrylic. Reserved and intimate, Autumn Dusk has the capacity to mesmerize the thoughtful viewer and poetically shows how Lake Superior can change from hour to hour and season to season.

One of the artists of the Hudson River School, Cropsey often painted scenes of the White Mountains in New Hampshire, as in this moody landscape from 1860. Popularly known as America’s “Painter of Autumn,” he excelled at depicting the colors and textures of fall. In this nostalgic scene, painted at a time when Native Americans were no longer roaming the Northeast mountains, Cropsey hides several Indians in the foliage at the left. One prepares his bow and arrow as he stalks the deer emerging from the river at the right. At least four other Indians have been detected in the dense brush.
