<text>Inspired by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem The Song of Hiawatha (1885), Paul Manship created this bronze sculpture of Mudjekeewis stealing the Belt of Wampum from Mishe-Mokwa, the Great Bear of the mountains. Manship represents Mudjekeewis as a Native American man wearing a necklace of bear claws and a full headdress of eagle feathers. A bear sits on Mudjekeewis' right with his head bowed down. Descending from a cloud Mudjekeewis holds a club in his proper right hand as his proper left hand grips the belt around the bear's neck. A cube of marble supports the sculpture.</text>

<text>In Ojibwe lore the west wind - Mudjekeewis (from the Anishinaabe majiikiwis "first-born son") - is associated with the season of autumn and symbolized by the bear. When the west wind blows, it represents a time of strength and maturity born of knowing yourself and your responsibilities. Manship likely modeled his figure of Mudjekeewis from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's well-known epic poem The Song of Hiawatha (1855). In Chapter Two, Mudjekeewis becomes Father of the Four Winds by stealing the Belt of Wampum from the neck of Mishe-Mokwa, the Great Bear of the mountains. Longfellow's much-maligned epic poem should be understood as a work of American Romantic literature, not as a record or representation of Native American oral tradition. (Source: Museum Label)</text>

It is of the old grandfather, Mudjekeewis, the West Wind, who stole the sacred belt of Wampum from the neck of Mishe-Mokwa, the Great Bear of the Mountains--the bear is droopy coming out of hibernation and from a cloud comes the mighty Mudjekeewis to steal the belt--This works well in the sculptural composition which I have done at small size in wax and is now being translated into metal---but would it not be appropriate for your group to stand at heroic size over-looking the mighty river--from where the Indian Mounds rise?"
