<text>One of the artists of the Hudson River School, Cropsey often painted scenes of the White Mountains in New Hampshire, as in this moody landscape from 1860. Popularly known as America’s “Painter of Autumn,” he excelled at depicting the colors and textures of fall. In this nostalgic scene, painted at a time when Native Americans were no longer roaming the Northeast mountains, Cropsey hides several Indians in the foliage at the left. One prepares his bow and arrow as he stalks the deer emerging from the river at the right. At least four other Indians have been detected in the dense brush.</text>
