Warren MacKenzie is widely recognized as one of the most influential ceramic artists of the past 60 years. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, MacKenzie graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1948. In the same year, he moved to Saint Paul with his wife Alix to accept his first teaching job as an instructor of ceramics, sculpture, and design at the Saint Paul Gallery and School of Art, the former name of the Minnesota Museum of American Art. The MacKenzies collaborated on their pots, Warren throwing and shaping and Alix providing the decoration. Each of the six bowls in the set reveal Alix’s inventiveness with decoration, which melds both abstract and figurative formal elements.

One of a series of six soup bowls in the M's collection, this ceramic was produced through the collaborative efforts of Warren and Alix MacKenzie. The bowl's grayish-white color is the result of applying glaze to white slipped stoneware, while the pattern of dark vertical and horizontal lines in the bowl is a non-oxide surface painting by Alix.

If the intended purpose of this vase is immediately self-evident, it also—on a more subtle level—evokes an intangible presence that links the user with the maker. Through the Tenmoku and white glaze on the surface, Alix MacKenzie lightly brushed the fingertips of her hand, leaving abstract organic marks that animate the vase’s form and are a visual reminder of the maker. Warren and Alix were instrumental in the development of the Fiber-Clay-Metal exhibitions that the Saint Paul Gallery and School of Art installed between 1952 and 1964, which were the source of many great craft works entering the museum’s collection. This work entered the collection through the Museum’s Fiber-Clay-Metal biennial of 1959.

Created by Warren MacKenzie and his wife Alix, this stoneware vase has a thin base, rounding outwards to its widest at the center, and forming a lip at the top. The vase's bottom two-thirds is covered in a dark glaze which contrasts with the light colored top third. Across the pot's widest curved surface are four winged marks. These were made by Alix when she brushed her fingertips through the Tenmoku and white glaze.

Ceramics by Warren MacKenzie are meant to be used in the home and enjoyed daily. Made nearly 50 years after the other MacKenzie works in this exhibition, this tall, lidded jar reveals Mackenzie’s hand at the potter’s wheel. MacKenzie gives the fluted jar more structure by cutting away the form with a potter’s tool to create a dynamic surface.

This lidded jar by Warren MacKenzie has a surface covered with vertical fluted areas about one inch wide. Fired separately, the lid has the same fluted sides as the jar. It has a yellow hue, is scattered with brown spots, and has brown streaks appearing along the edges of the fluted areas. The jar’s yellowish color is the result of pouring a matte brown glaze over a matte grey glaze.

For over 30 years, Minnesota artist Tim Harding has created wearables and wall pieces that reference historical textile traditions and offer innovative techniques in fabric design. Unlike many wearable artists, Harding maintains a successful apparel production enterprise that does not impede his creation of one-of-a-kind studio fiber art pieces. In this stunning greatcoat, the realistic rendering of the movement of koi (Japanese ornamental carp) below the reflective blue water’s surface renders impressionistic images that are as changeable as the rich silks themselves. It is particularly symbolic that Harding chose to present the koi on the form of a Japanese kimono. Koi is one example of the strong textile collection found at the Minnesota Museum of American Art.

Known as an abstract expressionist during the movement’s heyday in the 1950s, Mark Tobey synthesized East and West in his distinguished artistic career. Born in Wisconsin and largely self-taught as an artist, Tobey settled in Seattle, Washington, and was part of the Northwest school, marked by an abstract approach to painting inflected with mystical Eastern ideas and techniques. Space Ritual #12 is one of a group of large drawings created in 1957 with Sumi ink, a Japanese medium that requires swift, decisive action because brushstrokes cannot be erased or re-worked. Having studied Sumi painting in 1934 while at a Zen monastery in Japan, Tobey felt it offered his very American abstract style of painting a directness of spirit and clear sense of harmony.
