Description
describe the object
This print by Emma Amos portrays a young woman in a red skirt and red shirt with green stripes. The girl is positioned in a dynamic pose, standing on one leg with her other bent at the knee. Her upper torso is curved forward and her arms are outstretched. Amos placed this figure in front of an abstract background, which she filled with large sections of solid colors. The upper left corner is colored yellow, the upper right side is orange, and the lower portion of the print is blue.

It is likely no coincidence that Amos returned to the human figure in the summer of '68, when death and conflict dominated the news. The Vietnam War was escalating. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in April, sparking riots across the country, and Robert Kennedy was assassinated a month later. She wanted to affirm the humanity and legitimacy of the black body, "that black is beautiful and there's nothing wrong with it."

Notes
Include any additional information pertaining to the object.
Emma Amos was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, in a middle-class family. Amos recalls that during her youth in the segregated South, African Americans had little access to "real" art in museums or galleries. She began her artistic education by copying figures out of popular magazines, and in 1954 went on to study art at Antioch College in Ohio. During her fourth year Amos studied abroad at the Central School of Art and Design (now Central Saint Martens College) in London, focusing on etching and weaving. After graduating from Antioch in 1958 Amos moved to New York, where she worked for textile artist Dorothy Liebes designing rugs for a major manufacturer. She was also active in Spiral, a group of black artists that included Romare Bearden, Norman Lewis, and Hale Woodruff. Amos taught for many years in the School of Art at Rutgers University.

Description
describe the object
In this watercolor by George Morrison, the artist painted a network of black vertical and horizontal lines against alternating strips of blue, green, and orange color. Producing what he called “little Cubistic sections” of varying rectangular and rounded shapes, Morrison created a dynamic between positive and negative space by juxtaposing colored and non-colored sections.

For over 30 years, Minnesota artist Tim Harding has created wearables and wall pieces that reference historical textile traditions and offer innovative techniques in fabric design. Unlike many wearable artists, Harding maintains a successful apparel production enterprise that does not impede his creation of one-of-a-kind studio fiber art pieces. In this stunning greatcoat, the realistic rendering of the movement of koi (Japanese ornamental carp) below the reflective blue water’s surface renders impressionistic images that are as changeable as the rich silks themselves. It is particularly symbolic that Harding chose to present the koi on the form of a Japanese kimono. <em>Koi</em> is one example of the strong textile collection found at the Minnesota Museum of American Art.
