Description
describe the object
Textile designer Susan Goldberg used the process of screenprinting to decorate this piece of black rayon. The artwork is mounted and takes on the appearance of an abstract painting. Goldberg covered the fabric with multi-colored dots. The dots appear to be arranged randomly. Yellow, white, light green, and orange dots are grouped together near the top, bottom, left and right edges of the work. These groupings are surrounded by shades of purple, oranges, and black.

This object relates to a bolt of fabric that still exists in the M's collection. At some point, this piece was cut from the bolt of fabric and stretched around this stretcher to appear like a painting.

Description
describe the object
Kate Anderson pays homage to Henri Matisse with her knotted teapot by featuring two decorative designs based on Matisse's paper cutouts. One side of the teapot depicts a white figure centered within a diagonal strip of black. Yellow star-like shapes surround this abstracted figure and are set against a blue background. On the adjacent side, Anderson knotted a red cross in the center with square patches of dark blue in each corner. Horizontal strips of light blue run along the top and bottom of the teapot. The corners each contain a lightly colored floral shape. The handle is solid, with the outward facing side shaped into three curved bumps. The adjoining lid has a long and skinny rectangular shape.

Kate Anderson's Matisse Teapot uses the repetitive basketry technique of "knotting" to create a teapot, not practical for serving tea, but for the pure of fun of seeing the work of the great French artist Henri Matisse in an unexpected place. St. Louis artist Anderson utilizes iconic images by artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, and Georgia O'Keefe to create an object that blurs the boundaries between "high art" and craft. Here, she depicts the central image of Henri Matisse's 1947 artist's book Jazz.

For over 30 years, Minnesota artist Tim Harding has created wearables and wall pieces that reference historical textile traditions and offer innovative techniques in fabric design. Unlike many wearable artists, Harding maintains a successful apparel production enterprise that does not impede his creation of one-of-a-kind studio fiber art pieces. In this stunning greatcoat, the realistic rendering of the movement of koi (Japanese ornamental carp) below the reflective blue water’s surface renders impressionistic images that are as changeable as the rich silks themselves. It is particularly symbolic that Harding chose to present the koi on the form of a Japanese kimono. Koi is one example of the strong textile collection found at the Minnesota Museum of American Art.
