Robert Henri is best known as the leader of the Eight, the anti-establishment artists who formed an early American modernist movement known as the Ashcan school. Like the other artists in this group, Henri embraced subject matter that was urban and sometimes gritty or unattractive, as in this portrait of a Spanish dressmaker from 1906. He depicted this “modiste” (the French word for dressmaker) with a frankness and boldness that recalls his description of gypsies—another Spanish subject Henri frequently explored—as “proud as if each one was a king or queen.” His masterful handling of pigment in Modiste of Madrid includes energetic, thrilling slashes of paint and subtle, refined combinations of color.
