Notes
Emma Amos was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, in a middle-class family. Amos recalls that during her youth in the segregated South, African Americans had little access to "real" art in museums or galleries. She began her artistic education by copying figures out of popular magazines, and in 1954 went on to study art at Antioch College in Ohio. During her fourth year Amos studied abroad at the Central School of Art and Design (now Central Saint Martens College) in London, focusing on etching and weaving. After graduating from Antioch in 1958 Amos moved to New York, where she worked for textile artist Dorothy Liebes designing rugs for a major manufacturer. She was also active in Spiral, a group of black artists that included Romare Bearden, Norman Lewis, and Hale Woodruff. Amos taught for many years in the School of Art at Rutgers University.
