The Saint Paul Winter Carnival is an annual celebration that began in 1886. The carnival takes place over a ten-day period between the months of January and February. This celebration promotes the City of Saint Paul and its surrounding areas through a variety of activities and pageants. These activities are based on a Minnesota legend, when Boreas, King of Ice and Snow, was overthrown by Vulcanus, King of Fire and Warmth, at the end of a ten day celebration hosted by the Snow King.
