Notes
Bill Cottman's series, Four Women; Stories of Freedom, Identity, and Responsibility, spans thirty years, was part of his McKnight Fellowship, and culminated in two exhibitions. The series consists of the four women the photographer has lived with - his mother, wife, mother-in-law, and daughter - and their stories of freedom, identity and responsibility.
J. Otis Powell‽'s poetry and prose were inspired by Cottman's photographic journey. Following the exhibiton of his Four Women series, Cottman created a book as a record of his work and J. Otis Powell‽'s words. Basic Training is the only broadside print Cottman and Powell‽ made in which they combined a photograph from the Four Women series with the adjoining text. It is the third edition of fourty.
